YAP!

Attention! Calling all YAPs! InfoComm is starting a YAP community just for you.  What is a YAP you ask?  Am I a YAP?  YAP stands for "Young Audiovisual Professional"  and we consider anyone who is young in age, spirit or new to the industry a YAP.  Are you under 35 or just getting into the industry, then you're a YAP.  As cliché as it may sound, all of us YAPs are the future of the audiovisual industry and we need a forum to network, discuss, collaborate and learn about the issues facing us in the audiovisual industry.  So if you consider yourself a YAP, read on.

First a little background about myself. My name is Marc Bialek, and I have worked for InfoComm as the manager of member services for 3 and a half years.  I write half because as a card carrying member of generation Y, that's the longest I have ever worked anywhere and I consider it quite an accomplishment.  One of my jobs at InfoComm is to travel to all of the regional roundtable events we hold (I've been to almost 40!) and one of the things I notice at every event is that I am always the youngest person in the room.  The members who typically attend roundtables are veterans in the industry with well-established AV careers.  My co-workers and I notice the same recurring topics and issues seem to affect these members, but don't necessarily pertain to us YAPs.  In fact, one of the biggest issues they say they are facing is how it's very difficult to attract young people into the industry.  I've noticed that there ARE young people in the industry, but we just don't have a forum in which to collaborate, which is why we're introducing the new YAP online community.  I want to learn about my fellow YAPs through open discussions on issues that pertain to us.

As a jumping off point, I want to discover how you got into the audiovisual industry.  Did you fall into AV just like I fell into the non-profit world? What attracted you to the industry and what makes you stay? If you are young in years or maturity and would like to help me figure out how young people are getting into the audiovisual industry, please go to our new community and tell your story:

  1. Go towww.infocomm.org/community
  2. Login using your InfoComm member username and password.  Follow instructions if you forgot your login info.
  3. Under the "Communities" tab, locate the Young Audiovisual Professionals community and click "Join."
  4. Post your story under discussions and connect with other YAPs.

For help or questions, contact Molly (another YAP) at mthompson@Infocomm.org.

Lastly, if you know other YAPs, please invite them to join the Community and be part of the discussion.

Mark,

Glad to see that InfoComm initiated a group like this. It is truly worthwhile finding and conversing with peers in our industry. I agree- I think there may be more YAPs than we think- so let's get the discussion started!

I fell into this industry by accident and I was even more surprised when I realized I had fallen in love with it. Yes, sappy, I know. The enthusiasm and passion of the people in this industry are what draw me in and keep me here. All technicalities aside, AV people just LOVE what they do. It isn't about creating something that is just good enough. It is about perfecting an overall experience that evokes emotion, creativity, understanding, clarity, excitement, etc. When you see AV people talk about projects, products or events, you see a gleam in their eye that speaks, "I made that and did you see their reaction- did you see what it DID?" It is a sense of pride that you don't see in many other industries where good enough is common practice.  There is an insatiable need in this industry to continue to achieve more with ever changing technology- keeping AV people on their toes and always learning, perfecting, relearning and achieving more by traversing unexplored terrain and creating a solution so powerful, it can move you.

OK, so I sound a bit dramatic- but all of this is true.  Good enough is not good enough for our industry.  And that's why I stay.

Looking forward to hearing from others...and I will surely spread the word about this group.

Hello fellow YAPs,

I am David Hidalgo from Houston Texas, I also am a young tech learning from the best and keeping it creative here in the Houston Area. I look forward to hearing about new people that have ideas and interests in the Audio Visual lifestyle. Doing AV here in Houston is a fluctuating cycle. Some months we are overflowing with work, others we are looking around for interesting business to get into. Never the less we are working together as a team and I love doing what I do. I have many plans with the city and other local businesses to start some festivals and local art stimulation. I hope to meet more young people to work with and learn from, but Its having the years ahead that keep me working hard everyday with the people i meet. Being a YAP is new to me, yet I have been doing AV for around 8 years so far. So its funny to hear such an acronym describing the young people of the business. I hope to hear from some new people soon and I hope that I can learn how to move my career in a good direction with the connectivity of infocomm. Thank you for being there and I hope to see some more YAPs around here soon.

David & other YAPs in the Houston area:

Beginning this weekend, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is having its annual International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE) in Houston. On Sunday there is a social event for early career engineers, but it is an open event and may be something Young AV Professionals would be interested in. More details can be found here:http://www.asmeconferences.org/Congress2012/EarlyCareer.cfm or you can RSVP on facebook:http://on.fb.me/UxY3au . I will be there, so find me if any of you are able to attend.

Greetings,
Though I've only got another month or so left before my odometer rolls over to 35 years I thought it might be beneficial to join as a YAP while I can.  I've been working in AV integration for the last 4-5 years and came from a live audio, Deejay, and college radio background.

Our firm (The Audio Visual Comany) is based in Hawaii on the main island of Oahu.  After cutting my teeth in corporate & military sales for a couple of years, I had a brief stint as sales manager before becoming a system designer while handling sales simultaneously.  I'm now full time on the design side of the business and the more I learn, the more I realize just how little I know.

If anyone can suggest other venues for networking and discussions, let me know.  I'm group member for InfoComm, Pro AV, AV Professionals, Command and Control rooms, and a few other LinkedIn groups but feedback there tends to be hit or miss.

Mahalo,

Hi Barry,

I'm so glad you found the YAP Community group.  InfoComm is always looking for new ways to engage our "young" av pros, so please let us know if you have any ideas and suggestions about how to engage our young talent.

The InfoComm Community will be launching a new Member Forum community in the coming weeks, which will be a resource for you when trying to connect with other InfoComm members.  Be on the look out for that and do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Best,
Molly
