Young Audiovisual Professionals

Attention! Calling all YAPs! InfoComm is starting a YAP community just for you.  What is a YAP you ask?  Am I a YAP?  YAP stands for "Young Audiovisual Professional"  and we consider anyone who is young in age, spirit or new to the industry a YAP.  Are you under 35 or just getting into the industry, then you're a YAP.  As cliché as it may sound, all of us YAPs are the future of the audiovisual industry and we need a forum to network, discuss, collaborate and learn about the issues facing us in the audiovisual industry.  So if you consider yourself a YAP, read on. 

First a little background about myself. My name is Marc Bialek, and I have worked for InfoComm as the manager of member services for 3 and a half years.  I write half because as a card carrying member of generation Y, that's the longest I have ever worked anywhere and I consider it quite an accomplishment.  One of my jobs at InfoComm is to travel to all of the regional roundtable events we hold (I've been to almost 40!) and one of the things I notice at every event is that I am always the youngest person in the room.  The members who typically attend roundtables are veterans in the industry with well-established AV careers.  My co-workers and I notice the same recurring topics and issues seem to affect these members, but don't necessarily pertain to us YAPs.  In fact, one of the biggest issues they say they are facing is how it's very difficult to attract young people into the industry.  I've noticed that there ARE young people in the industry, but we just don't have a forum in which to collaborate, which is why we're introducing the new YAP online community.  I want to learn about my fellow YAPs through open discussions on issues that pertain to us.
